Assessment and repair of damage after a 24m yacht collided with rocks
THE ACCIDENT AND THE INITIAL RESPONSE
After suffering a severe impact against the rocks, the owner of a 24-meter motor yacht contacted Orienta SI to assess the damage and determine the necessary actions to ensure the vessel’s safety and begin its subsequent repairs.
The initial inspection was carried out while the yacht was still afloat. The impact had caused significant flooding, so it was necessary to define a temporary solution and establish the means and conditions required to safely tow the vessel to the repair site.
DAMAGE INSPECTION ON DRY WATER
Once the vessel was ashore, a detailed inspection was carried out. Significant damage was identified to the hull and the stabilizer on the affected side.
After disassembly by the specialist technical service, damage was also found to the IPS unit on the same side.
DEFINITION AND MONITORING OF THE REPAIR
Orienta SI determined the extent of the damage to the hull and drafted the technical repair procedure. During the execution of the work, technical assistance was provided to both the repairer and the captain to resolve any issues that arose and to verify the correct application of the defined solution.
TECHNICAL REPORT FOR THE INSURANCE COMPANY
In parallel, a technical report was prepared on the damage sustained by the IPS unit. The insurance company had initially rejected its replacement, so it was necessary to provide technical justification for both the extent of the damage and the need to replace the component.
After the report was submitted, the insurance company accepted the replacement of the IPS unit and its inclusion in the claim coverage.
RESULTS OF THE INTERVENTION
The intervention encompassed the entire technical process following the accident: the implementation of provisional measures to control the leak, preparation for the vessel’s relocation, the dry-dock inspection, the definition of and assistance during the hull repair, and the preparation of the technical report for the insurance company.
In this way, the owner had an independent technical assessment to make decisions, coordinate the repairs, and adequately defend the true extent of the damage sustained by the vessel.
